CBRN Security Program

The CBRN Security Program advances global efforts to reduce chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks through an integrated approach that combines education, professional training, research, and international engagement.

The program brings together practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and emerging leaders to strengthen national and regional capacities to prevent, detect, and respond to CBRN threats, with a particular emphasis on radiological and nuclear security. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships with governments, international organizations, national laboratories, universities, and industry, the program develops practical, evidence-based solutions to emerging security challenges.

By fostering technical expertise, promoting international cooperation, and supporting applied research and capacity-building initiatives, the program contributes to strengthening global CBRN security and developing the next generation of security professionals.

Chemical & Biological Weapons Nonproliferation Program (CBWNP)

The CBWNP program follows developments throughout the world related to the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons and the negotiation and implementation of related arms control treaties and non- or counter-proliferation measures. It also conducts preparedness planning and training for local, state, and federal officials on incidents of chemical and biological terrorism.

East Asia Nonproliferation Program (EANP)

The EANP program is building a community of nonproliferation specialists in East Asia by introducing new courses in universities on arms control and nonproliferation; training government officials, journalists, research analysts, and professors in nonproliferation issues through its visiting fellows program; and linking a new generation of East Asian professionals to the international community of nonproliferation specialists. EANP conducts extensive research studies on nonproliferation issues affecting East Asia and operates one of the most comprehensive open-source electronic databases on Chinese arms control and nonproliferation developments.

Eurasia Nonproliferation Program (ENP)

The ENP program is composed of experts specializing in problems related to weapons of mass destruction in the countries of Eurasia. Research focuses, in particular, on the myriad arms control, nonproliferation and nuclear safety challenges emanating from the Russo-Ukrainian war. Other areas of research include Russia’s multilateral nuclear diplomacy as well as that involving the parties to the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free zone. The program also provides training and research opportunities to a broader community of specialists from Eurasian countries, supports the introduction of nonproliferation courses and material in the universities of these states, and facilitates the integration of specialists into the broader group of international nonproliferation experts.

Export Control and Nonproliferation Program (XNP)

The Export Control and Nonproliferation Program performs export control-related research, training and industry engagement projects. Training programs are designed to build export control and nonproliferation awareness among practitioners in government, industry and academia.

International Organizations & Nonproliferation Program (IONP)

The IONP conducts research and policy analysis on the new roles and activities of international organizations as they deal with emerging proliferation concerns. It currently focuses on the review processes of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention to prepare policymakers for future review conferences of these treaties.

Middle East Nonproliferation Program

The CNS Middle East Nonproliferation Program is dedicated to preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East and reducing the risk of their use. It pursues this through original, policy-focused research; advocacy for robust nonproliferation policies; teaching and training on regional issues; and efforts to enhance regional security and dialogue.

Nonproliferation Education Program

The Education Program (EDU) supports the mission of the Center through its visiting fellows program, high school education and outreach activities, recruitment of prospective students, placement of graduate research assistants and summer interns, and training officials and academics nonproliferation terminology. Program staff and project managers also engage in research on disarmament and nonproliferation education, combating the spread of weapons of mass destruction, and regional security issues.
